A Regional KOC Cooperation Committee Held a Meeting in the Village of Bakonbayevo, Ton District A regional KOC Cooperation Committee held a meeting in the village of Bakonbayevo, Ton district, on July 29, 2011, attended by district government officials and public representatives. Kumtor Operating Company was represented by Kerim Shatmanov, Manager, Community Relations, and Rysbek Toktogul, Manager, Finance and Accounting. The meeting discussed technical matters related to the Kumtor-sponsored micro-credit agency, Ton Finance, to be opened soon. It interviewed candidates for the new micro-credit agency’s head and, having chosen one from among the selected candidates on a competitive basis, appointed him as the director of the Ton Finance micro-credit agency. Ton Finance’s key objective will be to create in the Ton district conditions facilitating public access to financial resources with an eye to improving the regional economy, private business and farming.

A Second International Conference of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Took Place in Issyk-Kul Province A second EITI international conference, “After Validation: Looking Into the Future of EITI”, took place at Cholpon-Ata, June, 13-16, 2011. Participating in the conference were representatives of Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Tajikistan. For three days, the participants were exchanging experience and discussing the hurdles they had to clear. The conference guests admitted that the EITI-related legislation in their countries was not as perfect as that in Kyrgyzstan. The speakers agreed that openness and transparency were good things to champion. “Openness and transparency would enable miners to establish a dialogue with civil society and government authorities. Both local communities and the rest of the population should be well informed as to the contribution the enterprises make to the economic development. A National Junior’s Championship Held at Tosor on June 11, 2011, with KOC’s Support A National Junior’s Championship, the Janek Baatyr Cup, was held on June 11, 2011, at Tosor with KOC’s support. This is the second competition of the kind, this time with a wider range of participants, including about 200 sportsmen coming from all regions of Kyrgyzstan and neighboring Kazakhstan. In the weight class of under 60 kg, the winners were Dmitry Puchin (the village of Tosor), Janibek Talaibekov (the village of Ton), Bakyt Egemberdiyev (Junior’s Sports School) and two Osh residents, Sagymbai uulu Baiman and Mamyt uulu Jakshilyk. In the weight division of under 73 kg, the winners’ list included Borobai uulu Nursultan (the town of Tokmok), Fakhriddin Amatov (the village of Tosor), and Ermek Sariyev (Bishkek University of Humanities). Norwegian Professors Visit Kumtor On May 17, 2011, two Norwegian professors, Richard Sinding-Larsen at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and Kåre Kullerud at the University of Tromsø, visited the Kumtor gold mine accompanied by their colleagues from the Institute of Mining and Mine Technologies (IMMT) at the Kyrgyz Technical University. The Norwegian scientists arrived in Kyrgyzstan to assist preparations for an international project that implies the training of IMMT graduates in Norwegian universities. According to the IMMT Director, Kuram Tashtanaliyev, his graduates normally have Kumtor in mind as their primary employment. In this light, a visit by the two Norwegian scientists to this country’s leading mine has become an important event of their visit to Kyrgystan. The guests were impressed by the Kumtor production scale. Centerra Gold Inc. (TSX: CG) and Kumtor Operating Company have summed up the results of the 1st quarter 2011. During the first three months of 2011, Kumtor produced 164 167 ounces¹ or 5106 kg of gold. Since the beginning of 2011, the Company has contributed more than $52 million2 in taxes and mandatory payments.

Kumtor Operating Company has decided to distribute 240 tonnes of Diesel fuel to the said two districts’ farmers at a reduced price of 28 soms per liter to grant numerous requests from the farmers who need Diesel fuel for the spring sowing campaign.
